Step 1 : Standard to be used
Which standard should be used?
The ISO 13857 standard, which uses the metric system (mm) only, is recommended. The ANSI B11.19 standard is its equivalent in the imperial system (in.). The CSA Z432 standards use both metric and imperial (mm and in.), while OSHA legislation uses only the imperial system (in.).
Generally, each standard selected applies to machinery built or installed after its publication date: ISO 13857 (1996*), ANSI B11.19 (2019), CSA Z432-1999 (1999), CSA Z432-2004 (2004). The OSHA 1910.217 legislation has been applicable since 1971.
For the CSA Z432 standards, the choice of measurement unit (mm or in.) dictates the data set used. If “mm” is selected, the data used are only those in millimeters in the standard and not data in inches converted into millimeters. In other words, the app does not convert data from metric to imperial or vice versa.
* The data used come from ISO 13852:1996, which became ISO 13857 in 2008.
